It is therefore crucial that we substantially improve the quality of schooling across the continent so that it results in actual learning and skills acquisition for the growing number of youths in Africa who will enter the labor force in the next 10 years. Under the current model, half of sub-Saharan Africa’s total primary school population – 61 million children – will reach adolescence without the basic skills needed to secure a sustainable meaningful livelihood for themselves. Across Africa, there is a challenging mismatch between the educational system and the skills required for the 21st Century.
